Hello First Grade Families!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed the weather (in between all the raining)! The students have been hard at work learning about government and our country's history in Social Studies. We are now moving on to Health and learning about food groups. We started today by discussing healthy vs. unhealthy foods and how we need to eat healthy foods every day to keep our bodies strong. We discussed that while it is okay to have an unhealthy treat every once in awhile, we should avoid eating lots of treats because they do not help make our bodies strong. Tomorrow we will have Health World come in to do a presentation on the food groups. This is during our regular library time, so Library has been rescheduled for Friday morning. You may send the books to school tomorrow or Friday, whichever you prefer.
In Math, we are finishing up Topic 2. We will have the quiz on Wednesday and the Test on Friday. I'm sending home the study guide for homework tomorrow. This study guide is not optional and will be due on Wednesday.
In Reading, we have 9, yes 9, new story words to learn! Make sure you practice those blue word cards every night! We are almost done with our second basal reader, which means I will be testing the students on their ability to read their story words after Thanksgiving Break. We are also learning about nouns this week. The students need to be able to tell me that a noun is a person, place, thing or animal and be able to identify a noun in a sentence. The homework sent home today should help them with that.
Our new spelling pattern this week is using the "or" sound. All of our new words will have that "or" sound in them. Please reinforce that the "or" sound is made by writing the vowel "o" first and then the "r". Some students get a little mixed up and occasionally write "ro" instead! Please make sure to practice spelling the words every day. A bonus practice would be to have your child practice writing sentences with the spelling words to get ready for the dictation test!
WOW! First graders are working hard this quarter! Keep up the good work! Also, ask your student what special visitors came to our building this morning. Also ask them what they performed for these special visitors!
