Weekly Update

We are back on track after have a wonderfully wacky week last week with lots of field trips and assemblies!  It's hard to believe that we literally have a month left of the school year!  With that being said, I am looking for some helpers.  If you have any spare time in the next few weeks, I am in desperate need of volunteers to help pack up the classroom in boxes.  As most of you may know, Benson is getting new floors over the summer so that means EVERYTHING must be packed!  It's a pretty hefty job, so if any of you have an hour to spare here or there and would be willing to help pack some things I would GREATLY appreciate it.  Just send me an email with your availability and I will let you know when you can come in!
Thanks so much!

Here's what is going on this week in first grade....
In Reading, we are reading the story Frog and Toad All Year.  We are working on retelling stories from the beginning to make sure we have included details from the beginning, middle and end of the story.  We also want to make sure to include the character names and setting in our retell.  In grammar, we are focusing on identifying verbs in sentences.  We will find verbs in the telling part of our sentence.

In Spelling, our word pattern for the week is ai/ay= the sound of long a.  See if your child can spell other words in this pattern that aren't on this list (i.e. rain, plain, stay, bay, etc).  This will be a true representation of how well they can understand and apply the spelling pattern.

In Math we are finishing up our Geometry unit.  Our quiz will be on Wednesday and the Test will be Friday.  Up next is our final unit.... Fractions!

In Science we are learning about animal habitats, organisms and animal families.  We just had an assembly to learn about a certain type of mammal... the bat!  Pictures are coming!

Keep working hard to finish out the rest of the school year.  We aren't slowing down because we still have SO much to do before we are officially SECOND GRADERS!  The students will be working hard until our very last day!  I'm so proud of the growth I've seen so far and I am very excited to continue seeing this until we break for summer!
