We had a great week in First Grade!
The students have started to get in the Thanksgiving spirit. We've started a few of our Thanksgiving projects including a creative writing piece where they take on the persona of a turkey who is about to become the main course for a Thanksgiving meal. Their responses are pretty hilarious!
In Math, we are continuing to work on subtraction strategies. Our subtraction unit will continue through the end of next week. The quiz and test will be the following week. Please keep working on both addition and subtraction facts at home. Flash cards are a great way to practice. There are many different games you can play with flash cards to make it more interesting. Do a google search on flashcard games or even look in the flash card box. Usually there's a card in there with a list of different activities to do with flash cards! Better yet, you and your child can invent your own game!
In Reading, we read the fantasy story "Space Pup". It's a fun story about a dog who sleeps during the day but turns into a super dog at night. He finds trouble and helps people. The students really enjoyed reading it and changing their voices to sound like super heroes whenever Space Pup spoke. We also talked about cause and effect and how certain things can CAUSE other things to happen. We had the most story words we've ever had and learned some songs to help us spell the tricky ones! Ask your child to sing you the spelling of people! I heard a lot of that during the spelling test today ;)
The words are continuing to get more challenging, so keep practicing at home. Some of the story words do become spelling words, so it's always a good idea to practice the bonus words as well. It will also help them learn to read those words!
In Social Studies we have been learning about our Government. We learned about our country's leader as well as our state and community leaders. We also talked about laws. The students brainstormed some laws they knew and talked about why laws are important. I heard some interesting stories during this discussion ;). Kids love to tell on their parents!
I look forward to seeing you all over the next couple of weeks for parent-teacher conferences. Have a great weekend!
