Hi everyone! Hope you are having a great day! We had a great week in first grade. Thanks to all of you who participated in parent-teacher conferences last night. I enjoyed meeting with all of you and look forward to the conferences I have planned for next week and the following Monday!
We read the non-fiction story, Where Do Frogs Come From?, in Reading this week. We were able to see how a frog grows from an egg, to a tadpole and finally into a frog. We were focusing on finding the smaller details to give us more information about a topic. We were also working on identifying and creating complete sentences. We get to practice that a lot in journal as well.
In Math, we finished our last lesson of unit 2 today! The students are doing a great job problem solving and even reading the math stories to find information and create a number sentence. Today, they did the whole lesson pretty much by themselves! I was extra proud! We will take our Math Quiz on Tuesday (since I forgot to send home the study guide tonight). We will make Monday a review day, Tuesday the quiz day and Wednesday the test day. Keep practicing those math facts with your child! Their mad minute scores will keep increasing if you practice daily!
In Social Studies, we have been learning about the first settlers in Plymouth, the Pilgrims. We have also been learning about the Native Americans who were already here when the Pilgrims arrived. The students really enjoyed hearing the story about the first Thanksgiving and were able to write about what they were thankful for. We wrote about it on a giant turkey feather to create a giant thankful Thanksgiving turkey! If you haven't seen it yet, it's very cool!
We also have kicked off our Health unit on the Food Groups with a special presentation from Health World. Health World came in on Thursday morning to teach us all about the food groups and about a new program called "My Plate". "My Plate" is being used to replace the traditional food pyramid. If you'd like to learn more about it, click on this link to learn: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/
We will continue learning more about the food groups this upcoming week.
Keep practicing those spelling words, reading every night and practicing math facts! Every little bit helps your child continue to succeed in first grade!
Have a great weekend!
:) Ms. Petrucci
