Holiday Traditions

Happy Wednesday!

We have been getting into the holiday spirit in room 7!  A lot of the students have started bringing in ornaments to decorate their personal trees in the classroom.  Please remember to send in one per day.  If you happen to forget to bring an ornament in one day, you may bring 2 in the next day.  The last week of school before Winter Break is a free for all.  The students may bring in as many as they would like so they can earn their prize!

Your child is bringing home a paper with a lined index card attached.  This is homework that is due on Monday.  Please help your child write down a holiday/winter tradition that your family participates in during this time of year.  The children will share their traditions with the class and then use them to create a special craft to decorate the classroom.  Please make sure that your child writes his/her name on the index card before bringing them back to school.  Thanks for your help with this project!

Here's a little update on what's been going on in our classroom:

Reading- We are on our last story of Unit 2, Fun with Fish.  The students LOVED this non-fiction story.  They had so much fun looking at all the different fish and discussing what they ALREADY knew about some of these fish.  I even learned a few new things!  Since we are ending this unit, I will be sending home all the story words the students will be assessed on tomorrow. START practicing reading those words ASAP!  I will begin testing the students on Monday.  We will have no new story or story words next week because we will be testing.

Math- We are almost done with Topic 6 (it's a shorter one).  We will finish the topic on Friday.  The quiz will be on Monday and the test will be on Wednesday.  I'll send home a study guide on Friday as optional homework.  The students have shown a good grasp on the concepts of related addition and subtraction facts as well as fact families.  Our next topic (Topic 7) will focus on counting and number patterns up to 120.  This will include skip counting.

Social Studies- We are working on some winter projects in Social Studies right now.  Next week we will start our 2 week unit on Holidays Around the World.  We will be learning about how different cultures celebrate Christmas and other winter holidays.  It's always fun to "travel" to the different countries to see how their celebrations are different than ours!

I think that's all I have for now!  I hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving!
:) Ms. Petrucci
