Happy Friday!
We've had a busy week in first grade, but it flew by! In reading, we finished our final story in Unit 2- "Fun With Fish". We had fun looking at all the great photographs and learning lots of new information about our underwater friends! Since we finished our final story, that means next week is Assessment week. The students will be tested on their ability to read all the story words (the blue word cards) from unit 2. They brought home a yellow sheet with all the words they are expected to read in case you are missing any of the blue cards. They will also take their second reading test, which assess them on all the reading skills we've learned during this unit. To help them prepare, you can go over these skills: naming and telling parts of sentences, nouns for people and places, picking out details in a story, the sounds of sh, th, fr, st, pr, sl, gr, sn, cr, sc, dr, sp and sm.
In math, we started a new topic, topic 6. This topic is the final topic covering math facts. In this topic, we are working on the subtraction strategies we have learned in previous topics, but with larger numbers. We are also learning about related addition and subtraction facts, as well as fact families. Next week we will finish the topic and have our quiz and test on topic 6. Keep practicing addition and subtraction math facts at home!
In health, we finished learning about food groups. The students did a great job designing a healthy lunch with foods from all different food groups. We also did an activity where we had to sort food into the correct food groups. A lot of them were surprised to find peanuts and eggs in the "meat" group! Next week we will start our Holidays Around the World unit. Please remember to send in the lined note card with your family's holiday tradition written on it. The students will be doing a project with the card on Monday. Thank you so much!
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Enjoy the warmer weather... I know I will!!
