Welcome Back!

I hope you all had a wonderful spring break and Easter holiday!  I know I did!  It was a little hard to wake up this morning....

Here's what's happening this week in first grade!
In Reading we are reading the story, Little Bear's Friend by: Maurice Sendak.  We will be focusing on the comprehension skill of Cause/Effect and the strategy of creating mental images to better understand a story.  We are also focusing on the grammar skill of using adjectives to describe "how many" (i.e.- one, two, a few, many, a little, a lot).

In Spelling we are learning the spelling pattern of y that sounds like long i.  Try to see if they can spell other words that fit this pattern that are not spelling words (i.e. fry, cry, dry, shy) to see if they truly understand the concept!

In Social Studies we are continuing to learn about work, community workers, and needs vs. wants.  They should be able to identify a need versus a want and why they are different.  Try it out the next time you are at the grocery store in the checkout aisle! ;)

In Math, we just started a new unit all about graphing and interpreting data from a graph.  We will learn about and how to make picture graphs and bar graphs as well as how to tally to record data.  This unit is a bit longer than the last couple of units.  We will be working on this for about 2 weeks.

We are also busy getting the classroom ready for Celebration of Learning!  We can't wait for all of you to visit our classroom to see what we've been busy creating for you!  Remember, it's Thursday, April 18th from 6:30-7:30 pm! Mark your calendars!!!

Here are some pictures from Jump Rope for Heart for you to enjoy!

Have a great week!
