MIA

Hello First Grade Families!

So sorry I have been MIA this week!  It's been one of those weeks!  Yikes!

Anyways... here's what we've been up to!

We read the story Jack and Rick this week in Reading.  The students practiced putting the story in order, or sequencing.  They did a great job with this activity!  Our spelling words this week were pretty difficult, but we all tried our very best and did very well on the test.  I am so proud!  We will be starting Guided Reading next week, so be on the lookout for those bags with the blue note and book in them!  I'll only be able to get through a few groups a day, so if your child doesn't bring one home right away, don't worry!

We just finished Topic 4 in math and will start Topic 5 on Monday.  Topic 5 is continuing on with the addition/subtraction strategies we learned in Topic 4, just with larger numbers.  Keep practicing those addition and subtraction facts at home!  Flash cards work perfectly for this!

Our unit on weather came to a close as we were able to go cloud watching this afternoon.  The first couple days we tried to do it we were out of luck!  There was not a single cloud in the sky!  Today we were able to see some great Cirrus clouds over the baseball fields.  We drew the cloud, named the cloud and listed why it was that kind of cloud.  We also culminated our weather unit with a mini celebration.  We watched the movie "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" and then compared it to the book which we read on Tuesday.  There are quite a few differences between the movie and the book.  We were great detectives and figured them all out!

The movie "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" comes out today!  I am planning a class get together to meet and see the movie after school!  So try and hold off seeing it so we can see it as a class at a later date!  I did this with a different group of first graders for the first movie and we had a BLAST!  I'll be sending a note home next week!

As you all know, Special Friend's Day was today!  We had such a great time with our special friends!  We read the story "Cloudette" by Tom Lichtenheld, wrote an acrostic poem for the word "Cloudy" and then created a picture with our Cloudettes for what she might do next.  After that, our special friends got to look through our desks, tour the room and see what we do in First Grade.  I took plenty of pictures and will post a few up here.  I will also email any individual pictures I took of your child and their special friends.  I'm hoping to get that done next week!

Check out the side pages for updated spelling words, homework and schedule!

Have a great weekend!
Ms. Petrucci
