Thank you!

Hello First Grade Families!

Sorry I did not get a chance to update this blog on Friday.  My day completely got away from me!

I wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to all the families who came to Curriculum Night on Thursday.  I really appreciated all of the support and it was nice to meet you all.  I hope you got a glimpse of what the year will be like and, most importantly, how your child spends 6 hours of his or her day.  As always, if you have any questions/concerns/comments, please feel free to contact me.

Here's a brief look into our week!
In math, we are still covering addition and subtraction strategies.  I am taking a 2 day break from the curriculum to teach them touch math and how to use a number line.  These are two strategies I like to teach for students who need a more tactile/visual approach to math.  I think it's important to note that I teach a variety of strategies for math facts because I know that all children learn differently.  Just because I'm teaching them a variety of strategies does not mean I expect your child to use every single one.  I want them to use the strategy which works best for them.  I will be sending home touch math homework with a note explaining what touch math is.  Let me know if you have any questions!

In Reading we are continuing to learn more reading and comprehension strategies.  We will be reading the nonfiction story "Ants" this week as well as learning about word order in sentences.  The spelling pattern for the week is focusing on the short vowel "i".  Keep practicing those words!

We are starting our weather unit this week.  Talk about the weather with your child at home!  We will be learning about different kinds of clouds later this week.  See if your child can identify a cumulus, stratus or cirrus cloud.

Also, if you are coming on our field trip tomorrow afternoon, dress you and your child for the weather and wear appropriate walking shoes.  It looks like it's going to be a nice day!  Let's hope the weather doesn't change on us!  If you're volunteering, I'll see you at 12:40 ish!

Happy Monday!
Ms. Petrucci
