Hello First Grade Families,
We had a great week in here in room 7! Report cards went out today, so please make sure you check your child's folder for that as soon as possible. It is important to review the report card with your child, so they know how they are doing in school and what they need to work on. Please make sure to remove all the pages from the report card. Those are yours to keep! All I need back is the signed envelope. Please make sure that gets back to school as soon as possible! Thank you!
This week was a busy one! In math, we finished topic 9 and moved on to topic 8. Topic 8 will cover place value with tens and ones. The students are feeling very successful with this so far. For extra practice, you can count by tens, talk about how many groups of tens and ones are in certain numbers, or even write numbers and have them identify the ones place and the tens place.
In Reading, we read the story "On the Way to the Pond" where 2 friends go on a picnic at a pond. They encounter some problems on the way. Luckily, they are prepared with all the necessary items to get them safely to the pond where they can enjoy their picnic. The students enjoyed the story very much. We also focused on special names of places. We discovered that all special places with an actual name need to start with a capital letter.
In spelling, we tried our hardest to all get a 10/10 on our words. Unfortunately we were unable to all get 10/10. We will try our hardest next week to reach that goal! The words this week were VERY challenging since they all had the "er, ir, or ur" sound. I told the children the best way to figure out the spelling is to look at the word and see if it looks right the way they spelled it. When they are misspelled, it will look funny to them.
In Science, we started our unit on matter. So far we have discussed the properties of matter and how we use our 5 senses to find different properties. We also learned that matter is ALL around us and makes up everything in our world. Next week we will start doing some experiments to help us discover different properties of matter. It will be very fun!
There is a note going home today about 100s day. Please read it and decide with your child will be making a 100th day collection. It can be anything they can carry (just not food). 100s day is Monday, January 28th.
Phew! That was a lot! I hope you all have a great long weekend!
Ms. Petrucci
