I hope you had a wonderful first week of school. I know I did! I have enjoyed getting to know your children this week. They are slowly but surely getting adjusted to first grade and all the "newness" that comes with being a first grader.
Today we reviewed the letters p and c as well as the vowel a. We sang a song about short a in various ways and completed a spelling page with short a words. We used what we knew about letter sounds to help us figure out what letters we needed to spell the words. The students did an awesome job!
We also went to Computers for the first time this morning. The students met Mrs. Guidotti, our computer lab teacher, and learned the rules of the computer lab. Then they were able to explore different computer games before going to lunch. They had a great time trying out the different games.
This afternoon, we watched the movie, "Arthur's Eyes" and then did some activities about our eyes! The students colored an eye to match the color of their eyes and then we graphed our eye colors. We discovered that most of our class has brown eyes with 12 students. Next were the blue eyes with 8 students. Finally came the green eyes with 2 students. The students used the class picture graph to color in their own graph. After all the graphing, we brainstormed different objects that match the color of our eyes. There were many creative ideas including chocolate, angry birds and ice cream!
The students are coming home with a bit of homework tonight. They need to complete an "All About Me" poster. There is a note attached to the poster explaining the assignment. They may use whatever materials they desire to complete the projects. You may choose to attach actual photographs or have them draw pictures to decorate the project. It is due one week from today, but if you finish it sooner, you may bring it in earlier. I'm excited to learn more about them from these posters! I've included a picture of mine if you need a visual example.
